Independent Student Learning Opportunity (ISLO)

 

Livingston High School students have an opportunity to earn course credits outside of the school district for advanced coursework provided the student adheres to LPS procedures. Students are not eligible to take an ISLO course until the completion of ninth grade. The 2026-2027 ISLO Information Packet will be posted on the LHS School Counseling website by February 2026. More information and the ISLO application will be shared with families and posted on the ISLO page of the LHS School Counseling website, by February 2026.

 

Summer School

 

Livingston High School offers a variety of ways for students to remediate or accelerate their program of study. Livingston High School and the School Counseling Department provides information regarding these options

 

  • Remediation Courses are offered in an online format as follows: 

 

  • Remediation Courses: Courses offered for remediation follow the same curriculum that is taught during the academic year and are designed for students to recoup lost credit. A student who either fails a course (receives the grade of an F, 59% or lower) OR if a student loses credit due to violation of the attendance policy at Livingston High School is eligible to retake the course for remediation. A list of pre-approved online remediation courses is made available in late Spring. Students and parents should discuss with their school counselor their plans to either remediate the course online in the summer or retake the course the following school year at Livingston High School. Remediation will be provided to all students who do not demonstrate a minimal level of proficiency on the NJGPA (New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment). Parents will be notified when these courses are required. Parents may not waive their child out of this NJGPA remedial class. Students may take up to two remediation courses concurrently during the summer at their own expense. The original failure (F) or N/C (no credit) will remain on the LHS transcript and will not be replaced by either a summer school/remediation course or a repeated course taken during the next school year. 

 

  • Livingston Public Schools Summer Academy offers the following in-person acceleration course options:

 

  • Acceleration Courses: Courses offered for acceleration include LPS teacher taught Individualized Student Learning Opportunity (ISLO) options. Students must still apply through the ISLO process and receive approval from Livingston Public Schools to register. All components of the ISLO process must be completed in order for students to earn credit for the ISLO course. The LHS School Counseling department also publishes an annual list of courses for students interested in applying for an ISLO in the summer that are offered outside of LHS. Students must be approved through the ISLO application process in order to take these courses and students must achieve at least a passing score of 60% or higher on related LPS competency assessments for that ISLO course in order to earn the course credits onto the LHS transcript. All of this information is detailed in the ISLO Information Packet and process which can be found on the LHS School Counseling website annually in February. 

 

  • Enrichment Courses: Courses offered for enrichment purposes provide students with a sample of content by which they might be intrigued and would like to explore more (including Bridge classes to help students determine if AP or Honors classes are a good fit for them). These courses are not awarded credit on the LHS transcript; they are offered purely for enrichment opportunities, an interest in learning or excitement in the area. Students and parents can see a full catalog of enrichment courses offered in the LPS Summer Academy Brochure, which is published in the Spring. 

 

  • LPS Bridge Courses: intended for students who would benefit from a preview of the coursework they will encounter in the coming school year. Over the course of the four-day program, key concepts from the initial units of study will be presented so that students are able to familiarize themselves with the topics they will see once the course begins. In addition, teachers will review effective study methods, and strategies to successfully navigate AP/Honors level coursework, and provide guidance as to how best to cope with a demanding course load. While some topics covered in these courses may help students as they complete their summer assignments for the respective classes, the summer assignment itself will not be completed as part of these bridge courses. These classes are particularly recommended for students who:
    • Are taking their first Advanced Placement (AP) or Honors class;
    • Were in a College Prep (CP) level course the previous year and are transitioning to an AP or Honors level class this year.
